Layers

February 21st, 2007 · 1 Comment

I just finished working on my ATC for Stamp Work’s March swap. The theme is “Alphabet.”

Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about layers. As I’ve looked through some of my books and magazines the projects that have jumped out at me all had layers and layers of color. I’m in awe of the artists who know enough about color and product to build up the vibrant overlapping hues without creating mud. I’ve decided that the best way for me to learn some of these techniques is to start playing.

My first attempt is a bit shy on color but it was an exercise in layers… and I think I managed to avoid it looking like mud or becoming a complete mess. I started with a white card and used black ink to stamp a random alphabet over it. Then to tone down the black I brushed over a light coat of gesso. Next came three colors of distress ink sponged onto the gesso. After that I brushed on some gold glaze. When that was dry I used purple distress ink and a word stamp, lightly buffing the image before it dried and stamping the woman’s face in black. Finally I embellished it with a torn strip of marbled paper, some die cut letters and a couple of bar staples. Not bad for an experiment, eh?

    Love it Chia,
I like the colors. It doesn’t need to be bright to be beautiful. It’s great to stretch beyond the comfort zone. I’m deliriously happy to know women who have amazing creativity & individual style.
Have you played with Photoshop in the layers palette ? Playing with the opacity of the layers? Adding shadows and effects? That may be helpful in gaining some virtual practice. Also have you thought about using bees wax to layer? Wow, now you’ve got me & my muse thinking….
    Fabulous work Chia!
    Love,

LOL, don’t laugh but I am a PSP (Paint Shop Pro) user and I’m still using my old copy of version 5! I think they are up to 15 now. I’ve been debating lately if I want to upgrade to the newer PSP or to invest in Photoshop. I’m dragging my heels because either one means leaving a comfort zone. But to answer your question.. I’ve done a little with layers in PSP but nothing quite as experimental as you suggested. Funny I never thought of that as I often use PSP to make mock ups of my ideas in order to get the layout and colors right before I start working with the papers.

Speaking of PSP.. have you seen the photo I made of Chris and the marble bag?
