The Color Of My Life

March 23rd, 2007 · 1 Comment

This isn’t exactly like the suggestions in the book (Visual Chronicles by Linda Woods and Karen Dinino) but then I seldom follow the rules.

I think of life as an adventure we are on. I’m not sure who the tour guide is because sometimes I feel like I’m just along for the ride and other times I am the navigator. Either way, it’s a wonderful journey.

For my ‘emotion’ color cards I decided to draw some buildings to serve as the scenery of my life. I drew them with a Pigma Micron pen from Sakura on a piece of white cardstock. Then, one by one, I assigned a feeling to each building, closed my eyes and tried to imagine what colors I associated with that feeling. Then I used watercolor crayons and pencils to color them in. I noticed that yellow plays a big role in my life. Sunshine…warmth…joy!

Life just wouldn’t be the same without my girls. I’m glad to have them along for the ride with me. I made a tag for each of the people who are a part of my artistic adventure and who provide inspiration for me. On the tags I placed their face and an assortment of colors that I think of when I think of them. I added little handwritten comments and then piled them all into a car with me. For my colors I chose green, blue and yellow. After choosing them I realized why those colors spoke to me… they are the colors of the earth, sun and sky/water. I also added some color around my head. I thought I was adding all the “bright ideas” that seem to shoot out all over the place by my friends inform me that I was just making myself look like the Statue of Liberty! Whatever.

Close your eyes, think of yourself, your friends and your life. What colors do you see?

Chia this is so cool. Can’t wait to see what more you come up with for your art journal. I wish I could feel so free with my artistic side, but right now my artistic side seems to be hiding.

    Hi Suzanne,
I’m sorry to hear your artistic spirt hasn’t returned yet. You’ve had a lot on your plate with the kids so the practical side may just be taking control for a while :)

You might enjoy this book and find that it helps you wake up the creative side. Its chapters have titles like “I have no time” “I’m just not artistic” and “nothing happens in my life”. Its kind of designed to show people how to get out of their slumps and into art. I’m finding it to be very good at motivating me to try new things. If you don’t want to get the book you can always follow along with my blog. I won’t be telling their directions in detail (or sharing their great examples) but between my descriptions and my samples maybe you could find an idea or two and make it a weekly exercise to wake up your muse. I’ll be posting every week on this until I finish the book.

The idea behind this color palett is that when it is time to work in the journal and I don’t know where to start I can ask myself what I have to write about and then go to the pallet to see what colors go with that topic. Then I have a jumping off point for my creativity. And if that fails at least I have a fun color palett to look at! LOL!

As Chris says ‘Rules, we don’t need no stinkin’ rules!’. And oh Ms. Chia you certainly don’t. I love watching the creative journey you’re on! My regards and love to you and Ruby!

I know that green paper on your Tag and Chris’ tag. You used it in my wedding collage. :)

Right you are! That is one of the most wonderful papers I’ve ever owned.

These kind of exercises are so important. I can’t believe how much I grow when I allow myself time for self reflection. This is a great activity; I love blues…all values and hues. I wonder if I sat down and did this project, if that would really come out or if other colors would pop up? Maybe I’ll have to find this book and give it a try…thanks for sharing.

    Hi Kathy,
The book lists for $22.99 but Amazon has a much better price for it. Check out the link on the right of the blog.

It was fun making myself think of things as colors. It’s so easy for us to stay in our comfort zone and do things the way that we always have. This made me step outside of that zone and grow a little.
