Have you been following the story about Ellen DeGeneres and the dog she adopted from a rescue organization called Mutts and Moms?
After bringing the dog home Ellen discovered that it just wasn’t going to work out between the new dog and the cats she already owned. In what I view as a responsible act, Ellen found a good home for the dog with her hairdresser and her two girls. Somehow Mutts and Moms found out about this and popped a cork.
Mutts and Moms says that Ellen didn’t have the right to give the dog away and if she couldn’t keep it she had to return it to them. They say it was in her contract, which some sources say was never created to begin with. They also say that they wouldn’t normally allow a small dog to be placed in a home with small children. The small children in this case are 11 and 12.
I’ve been reading reports about this drama and not really investing too much of my interest until today. I saw a comment from Mutts and Moms lawyer, Keith A. Fink, who among other things said, “If she would have told the agency ‘I have a great friend, she’s seen the dog and loves it, can you consider her?’ I know my clients would have.” That got my interest.
It seems that Mutts and Moms have not only gotten bad press from this but a lot of nasty emails and phone calls. It is reported that they have even received death threats. According to their lawyer their stance is,”They are not going to be bullied by the Ellen DeGeneres camp.” ” It’s Hollywood culture — she thinks she’s above the contract and the law.”
This really hit me like a ton of bricks. According to Fink they would have but now they won’t? OK, the Ellen “camp” has come on strong, way too strong, but is that what this is now about? Is this about punishing Ellen and the girls because of some ill mannered and mean fans? Is this about punishing the dog out of spite? The dog had a loving home and was well cared for, now he is back in foster care. I’m sure he is still well cared for but wasn’t the whole point to place him with a loving permanent family? Does anyone really think that Ellen adopted the dog and then found it a better home because she is some big star that wanted to flaunt her power? I think the Mutts and Moms need to get back to reality and remember what their mission is. I hope they return the dog to it’s family.

So do I! I learned about this yesterday and saw more last evening on the news. Was really upset with Mutts and Moms. They dug the hole deeper and now they can’t get out gracefully. Too bad! No good deed goes unpunished!

It’s too bad they didn’t say to Ellen, “You broke the rules but we will evaluate this new family and then make a decision about allowing them to adopt the dog.” It just feels like no one in this situation has paused to think before they acted or spoke. It’s a sad situation all around.
