Giant Asparagus – Update

October 2nd, 2008 · 3 Comments

Back in November I introduced you to my giant asparagus. In May I told you that it looked like it was starting to bloom.

The buds opened enough to put out little flower parts.

And then the flowers sort of dried up and did nothing more.  I started telling Recliner Man that it was time to cut the asparagus down because it was dead. He didn’t respond. The plant is in a side yard where we don’t see it very often and it falls prey to the ‘out of sight, out of mind’ factor.  A month later I mentioned that we still needed to cut down the dead asparagus. He said, “Do you think it’s dead?”. A month later I said, “We still need to cut the giant asparagus down.” He didn’t think it was dead. I thought he was just trying to get out of doing yard work. The routine continued.

For crying out loud, Abbey! What are you doing here? Not everything is about you, go chase a ball or something.

As I was saying… The routine continued and today I once again said to Recliner Man, “You still need to cut down the giant asparagus.” ” Do you think it’s dead?” He asked. Here we go again, I thought. I exhaled loudly, rolled my eyes and tuned to look at it thought the window. “Yeah, I think it’s dea….. huh. That’s funny. It looks funny, like it’s covered in baby plants.”

We rushed outside and stood staring up at our giant asparagus that was now covered in strange alien babies. This was getting weird, like something out of The Twilight Zone.

And then we looked down. One of the babies had detached from the mother plant and launched fearlessly toward earth. Our earth was under attack by alien plant babies!

They are going to spread out and take over the world. Hide your children and grandmas, run for cover! OK, so maybe it isn’t that dramatic, but I swear our plants in CT never did anything like this. Oh, and I don’t get out much.

UPDATE: I’ve spent some time searching the internet and I’m pretty sure this plant is an Agave americana. This is one of the varieties called a Century Plant. They all die after blooming once so I guess the clock is running out on this one. In a way that is a good thing because this one has outgrown its location near a pathway. Maybe we will plant one of the pups in a large planter. Sorry KT, I’d send you one but it gets too cold where you live.

That’s cool. You should plant some babies in pots.

Now that was funny! Just think, if recliner man hadn’t ignored it we wouldn’t have baby aliens, and that’s just wrong!
