I read this article about a contractor who found a stash of old money while doing renovations at a woman’s house. The money had been hidden by a previous owner of the house. The courts have already spoken on this matter and I don’t mean to be retrying the issue but I’m just wondering what your gut reaction to the situation is.
My first thought was that the woman bought the house and all that was left in it so the money belonged to her. She offered a small reward to the contractor but he felt he was entitled to a larger share. Suddenly the descendants of the man who hid the money showed up claiming that it belonged to them. In the end, the court gave everybody a share.
How would you have seen the ownership of the money?

I think that the courts did the only fair thing by dividing it. I’m sure that I would feel different if I was any of the people involved though.

They certainly were more generous that my first reaction was.

It’s funny…I had several reactions. First was, he found it, split it with him. Second was, he should have taken what was offered. But, she would have had nothing if he hadn’t found it. Who knows!

I think it belongs to the homeowner. She bought the house and everything in it–even the unknown money. Just think if a contractor found anything else in your house– would he be entitled to part of your dinette set because he “found” it? It’s in her house and it belongs to her. As for the people who were related to the ones who left the money in the house–a) they didn’t have anything to do with it in the first place, so why should they now? and b) if they had been the ones to leave it in the house, well, tough. If you leave something behind when you move out of your house, you can’t come back years later and ask for the current owners to give it back to you.
