Is it cheating to post a photo that I didn’t actually take? Yes? No? Ah, who cares, It’s my blog and I’ll do what I want. :) I scanned the image and that is about as close as I’ve gotten to photography this week.

This fine young gentleman is William Goforth Welch and he is my great-great-great-grandfather.His photo was among the huge collection of photos that my uncle loaned me for scanning last week. I spent approximately 38 hours scanning photos. Since getting home I’ve been spending a lot of time cleaning up the scans and building a directory to go with them. I’m about 16 hours into that project and I anticipate it taking about 100 hours.

When I was in Nebraska my uncle took me on a trip through the back roads of Kansas looking for William Goforth Welch’s grave.  I don’t quite get the excitement of photographing graves but I know that a lot of family history buffs think it is really important. For that reason I decided to take the photo… just in case I decide to get excited about it at a later date. I decided to post it here because I’m wracked with guilt for not using my own photo to lead off this post. Guilt is  a strong motivator and I am a total wimp… just ask Abbey who has taken over my desk and is forcing me to type with the keyboard in my lap. Wimpy, wimp wimp.

That is the weirdest beard I’ve ever seen. It looks like it’s velcro’d on.

Is there a year on this photo?

There is no date but William lived from 1813 to 1900. There is another photo of him looking quite a bit older so my guess is that this was taken around 1880 -1890.
