House Hunting

The Boy has decided to buy a house and spent yesterday afternoon touring seven homes with his real estate agent. I got to go along because I flung myself at his feet, grabbed hold of his ankles and begged, “please, please, please let me go with you.” I also did my best impression of “puppy dog eyes”. This first photo is of the first place we viewed. It was the least expensive choice and believe me, there were reasons for that. There was a bit to much “fixing up” to do. This wasn’t totally unexpected because we were looking at foreclosed and short sale homes, but this one wasn’t able to get us very excited. For the rest of the post I am going to highlight what The Boy and I thought were the best of the seven.

House # 1

hh1.jpg

This home is just one mile south of my home, which will make it very convienent for The Boy while he is saving up for his own washer and dryer. It was nicely priced and almost move in ready. It has 3 bedrooms and 2 full baths. It is in a non HOA neighborhood that has been kept up very nicely. The large back yard features a gated pool on one side and RV gates on both sides of the house. Besides the driveway, there is a large 2 car garage with tons of built in storage and a RV pad on the side of the house.

The main room features a cherry hardwood floor, a fireplace, and a vaulted ceiling. To the left are the bedrooms and to the right are the kitchen, dining area, and garage. There are all new windows throughout.

hh3.jpg

This was a little weird. It is the ceiling treatment over the dining area. It seemed like an attempt to bring a breakfast nook into the dining space category. This house lacks a stove but everything else seemed ready to go.

House #2

hh4.jpg

This 3 bedroom, 2 bath costs just a little more than #1 and is in a HOA neighborhood about 5 miles from my home. It had a fairly large living/dining room as well as a good sized kitchen and breakfast nook. There was also a laundry room.

hh5.jpg

The entire house was filled with good natural light and felt very airy. In this photo you are looking towards the front of the house. The kitchen and breakfast nook are straight ahead, the bedrooms to your right and the main entrance to the left.

hh6.jpg

The yard was a bit smaller than at house # 1 but only had a neighbors house on one side. (#1 had neighbors on 2 sides.) This one needed a window replaced and a little more TLC but showed pretty well.

House #3

hh7.jpg

This one is in a golf course community with an HOA about 5 miles from my home and is the most expensive option. This neighborhood is very compact. Each house has a small fenced yard on one side of the dwelling and 6 dwellings share one driveway. A could of the home, including this one, appear to have space in front of their garages where visitors could park but others don’t.This was all very odd to me.

hh8.jpg

The inside of the house was also compact. In this photo you can see where a breakfast bar was converted into a tv nook to make more room for furniture in the living room space. You can also see where the TV wire has been run up and over the front door to accommodate this improvement.

hh9.jpg

This home is a two story with 3 bedrooms and 2 1/2 baths. It was newer than the other homes and had nice appliances but was also in need of some new paint and TLC.

OK, I know a lot of you are HGTV fans, that’s why I presented this in a 3 home format. Sound like a show you know? LOLĀ  Which house do you think he should pick? Just like TV, he may or may not go along with your opinions. :)

There may be more decisions to make because we are going back out on Sunday morning to look at more houses. He needs to decide quickly though because these houses are priced well and in good condition. They won’t last on the market for very long.

I think I like number 2 best. Definitely not number 3. Shared driveway? In my opinion, the point of buying a house is to not have to share anything with anyone. Driveways included.

Number 2. As soon as I saw the outside I was ready to vote. Number 1 seems like a contender too, but a little dark for my taste. Of course, he may like that fireplace which does get it bonus points!

My thought is that he should “walk through” his day in each home… from getting up, till bedtime… is everything convenently placed etc. Does it just “feel right” to him…. ditto the neighbors comment as well!

From the pictures and commentary I vote for number 2. What Fun!

He had #1 and #2 at the top of his list and after finding out that #2 had a mold history was thinking that he wanted to put an offer on #1. Things have changed today. Changed a lot. I’ll pick some photos from our outing and do another blog post about it.

BTW, I am really liking his agent. If anyone needs to buy or sell in the PHX area and doesn’t have an agent let me know. I’ll give you her name and number.

He picked the corner kitchen one. Carpet can and maybe should be replaced. Mold is a definite to watch out for, as are trees so big the roots are pushing on the foundation. The open roof thing on one, did not look did it!
Faces…. what faces… oh you mean those two people looking in……. You might want to check with the family ghost hunter… They looked friendly. Might be a story to have the agent find out about.
He also loves Green! Make sure there are so liens on the house….get a statement to that effect, so if one turns up, the bank has to pay for it, not THE BOY…. ie carpenters, pool cleaners, etc. Love the pictures.

I see a couple typos… open roof thing did not look GOOD, did it! and NO liens.
    Sorry.
