Thumbelina’s Shadow

February 12th, 2010 · 8 Comments

I saw the hand doc again today. He says it will take another 6 to 9 weeks to heal.  Guess I won’t be parting ways with the splints any time soon. Today’s x-rays were much clearer. I could see the tip of the left bone was broken into 3 pieces. The tip of the right bone was so shattered that I didn’t even try to count all the pieces. Doc still thinks the bone will regrow and hold it all together so I should be just fine in time. Lots of time. :)

I did a little playing to come up with today’s image. Not a great work of art, to be sure, but not half bad when you take the splinted thumbs into consideration. It is kind of hard to tell, but I started out with an image of a thumb. Not mine, as I wanted to spare you the icky black nails and bruises. Even the doctor commented on how ugly they are. :)

Looks like you are already proficient at digital scrapping—-even without thumbs.
Very cute image for your post, Chia. I know not having thumbs has got to be very frustrating much of the time. As I am typing this I am trying to envision taking my thumbs out of the process and oh boy! Impressive, girl, Very impressive, what you are accomplishing thumbless!

This made me laugh out loud! I love how you are seeing the humor in this and not letting it become a major problem that stops you from being who you are.

CeCe, not digital. I put these fingers to work with paint brush, scissors, and glue! That kind of explains the paper choices. I’m not sure I used all the “right” colors in the border but I didn’t want to thumb through the whole stack so I just grabbed what was on top. hehe

Jan, welcome to the blog. Just about the time I made up my mind to move it in a more creative direction I broke the thumbs. That has slowed down the turn but I still have plans to get back to the fun stuff.

Wendy, I’ve actually been impressed with myself for how upbeat I’ve been from the very beginning. Considering the family curse for moodiness and depression, this has been a major win! I’m not taking it too far though. Billie told me right off that I should paint little faces on the splints like finger puppets and I just don’t feel that giddy yet. LOL

Chia! Wow! You really did a number on your thumbs! I hope the doc is right about all the bits growing together again. Cannot imagine how awkward it all is as well as frustrating. Cannot imagine not being able to use my thumbs normally. But one does adapt — you know, adapt or die, so they say. Good thing we are adaptable as humans!

Right now I am in Virginia visiting my grandchildren and saving my son and daughter-in-law from going crazy. I was told once I got here that my “not coming” was not an option. I sat on the fence for several days before I decided to fly out here. The only thing that is done well here in the way of plowing this stuff somewhere is at the airport — Dulles. They had it well cleared by the time I arrived on Thursday afternoon.

However, will be glad to get home to warmer temps. The thermometer hovers around freezing during the day and dips much lower at night. Brrr! Will take me days to thaw out once I get back to the good old desert!

Mind the doctor and get those thumbs back in order! Loved the “thumb” drive pic!

Hi Judy, I actually got a chill while reading your comment. All that snow is amazing. Hope there is lots of beauty to make up for the cold. Have a wonderful time with your family. I heard we are running back up to the 80′s next week so we will have things warm and waiting when you decide to return. :)

{{{Hugs}}} hon! Looks like even with 2 broken thumbs you can still get downright creative there.

I am more than impressed with how well you have adapted without use of those thumbs! The Thumbelina is great and watching you this evening at bunco, palming glass to drink and how much you were able to accomplish blew me away! Looking forward to seeing those faces you draw on them one of these days! You know you can’t resist forever – and you are thinking of how to do it. Luv U
